Drawing 324: Great Gable, from Haystacks
Direction of view: SSE
Notes: The viewpoint is the summit of Haystacks. The iron post looks much smaller now, as a cairn has grown up around it.
Surprisingly, this scene does not appear elsewhere in Wainwright’s published works.
Comments: I took this picture on 17th July 2017, a great day out in the hills. See 201 for an account of the day. On top of Haystacks, I met a group of walkers – two brothers and their partners – who were keen to hear the story of Wainwright’s ashes being scattered at Innominate Tarn, and I was pleased to tell them of Betty Wainwright’s visit together with Percy, Paul & Mike Duff, to perform this task. It happened on 22nd March 1991, a beautiful calm, clear day (see 395 below, and page 46 of Encounters with Wainwright published by The Wainwright Society for more detail on this occasion).
