Drawing 157: Green Crag, Warnscale
Direction of view: ENE
Notes: The viewpoint is on the path between Innominate and Blackbeck tarns. This picture does not occur in any of Wainwright’s other published works.
Comments: I took this picture on slide film on 13th September 1981 (image 1) – a late afternoon walk on a day of fine clouds and perfect visibility – and deep shadows! Peter Messenger and I ascended via Warnscale to Haystacks, returning over Fleetwith Pike and down the ridge to Gatesgarth. Drawings photographed on the day were 125 and 395, as well as this one.
I took image 2 – along with many others – for the digital project on 17th July 2017. See 201 for an account of that day. The path to Haystacks was popular, and I had to wait awhile to get a picture without other walkers.
The Helvellyn range can be seen in the background; Wainwright omits this from the sketch.
