Drawing 233: The old mill at Boot

Notes: Best taken late morning to early afternoon. The scene has not altered much since AW’s day, although some minor changes over the years are apparent from Peter Messenger’s photograph taken in the late 1970s. AW notes that the mill has “lost its industry”, though it is now active again.
This sketch also appears on page 171 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and a different drawing of the scene is on page 181 of The Outlying Fells.
Comments: First photographed for this project on 3rd December 2012 , on a short ramble around this part of Eskdale with Anne Setright. We also took the view of Boot itself (drawing 61), and “Dalegarth Force” [now known as “Stanley Force”] (371). The weather stayed dry, if mainly cloudy, but it was very wet underfoot after much recent rain.
Taken again on 20th June 2013, whilst relaxing waiting for the 11.50 train from Dalegarth to Ravenglass (see drawing 34). A beautiful morning, but foliage obscures much of the buildings in summer.
A better summer picture was obtained on 8th September 2015, whilst staying at Lane End Cottage in Boot with Anne.
