The photograph from which this sketch was drawn is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2/10. There is no dog to be seen in that photo.
Comments: I took this picture on slide film on 12th September 1981, an excursion with Peter Messenger: see drawing 23. Apart from tree growth on the far bank (and the absence of the dog!), the scene was little changed from that sketched by AW.
My visit with a digital camera was on 7th May 2015, the day of the General Election. After going to vote, Sheelagh Hughes Hallett and I headed up to the Lakes to see the famous Rannerdale bluebells; they were attractive, but not at their best this year, as two locals told us. I nipped up Rannerdale Knotts, and we then drove on to Buttermere, where I went to get this photo, appreciating that 4pm wasn’t likely to be the ideal time for it! In fact the picture I got wasn’t bad, and the bridge is less overgrown now than it was in 1981.
